I agree that SEO and SEM can be for everyone. I spend my days training non-profits on the SEM basics - they get it, and they can reach HUGE rewards by installing Google Analytics on their sites, and using Local Search and various Web 2.0 sites to out reach to their constituency. It IS time consuming, but the basics are not hard to understand if someone explains them to you.

I totally agree with you. In this day and digital age, without the search engines you might as well not have a website. The exceptions are companies with huge brand names where people will automatically type in the company's name as a url.

But even with large established company it's worth engaging in search engine optimization for related products and services. I guess the argument may be; is this something that the company should do in-house or outsource to professionals. Maybe that's what was meant by "SEO is not for everyone".

Let's face it SEO takes time and ongoing energy. Some companies don't have either and need to focus on other things, in which case I think it should be outsourced to reputable companies.

But at the end of the day, every company needs SEO. Who can't use more visibility or clients. That's like saying I'm fine and don't need anymore money. And that doesn't make "cents", literally.
