I agree with you that my previous, oversimplified advice wouldn't work in competitive niches and yes, it is a pity my 8000 social media inspired inbound links aren't worth more value (although that doesn't mean that social media doesn't play a vital role for branding, traffic and exposure... even if the links are crap).
